Onboarding Remote Employees: Tips for a Easy Start
Onboarding is a foundation of employee productivity, satisfaction, and the overall well-being of the team. It has always been quite a challenge, and the shift to remote onboarding during the pandemic has made it even more so. The world has changed, and companies must change too. Check these simple tips for the remote onboarding process and get ready for a fast start 🚀
Set Up the Work Environment
It's not just about giving your new hire a laptop and access to all the tools they need. Not only about having an onboarding plan. When working remotely, one can't quickly turn to a coworker for help or pick up information just by being in the office. This means all the questions pile up and slow down the adjustment process. To avoid this, assign a newbie an "onboarding buddy" - a coworker who can help them learn and be their go-to person for workday onboarding. If your company uses specific work tools and technologies, arrange a call with an internal IT expert who can walk the new hire through everything and thus ease digital employee onboarding.
Facilitate communication with colleagues
Zoom is good but water cooler conversation is better. When working from home, those random chats and bursts of laughter aren't as often. This makes it more challenging to get onboarded to the team and to understand internal dynamics along with the company culture. Don’t rely on common sense here and have lots of open communication to make sure everyone's on the same page. This should be part of any online onboarding.
Building connections with others is key here, so consider arranging both formal and informal calls to introduce the new employee to the team. Other good practices include chatting with co-founders or top executives and allowing newcomers to attend group meetings of choice for some period of time — even if they're not directly related to their role.
Make sure the goals are clear
It's not just about individual work goals, but also about understanding the company's mission and vision. What is the big-picture vision? How does my work contribute to it? How do my efforts power the company’s success, both in a short-term and long-term perspective? These are the key questions that any onboarding system must eventually answer, especially for manager onboarding. Only when each and every employee knows the answers, meaningful productive work is possible. Help a newbie get his answers through a series of 1:1 meetings with the team and the managers during the IT onboarding.
